My names Jason and I’m from Australia. I have recently obtained my cert IV in personal training from a course that the YMCA offers. I am intending to get a university or American college degree that relates to personal training/ fitness once I’ve got the cash.
Right now, I am in the process of starting my own in-home PT business. I am having some slight trouble in the marketing aspect of things as my budget is limited, but it is a good learning experience.
I am 23 in April and not the most experienced trainer, but I have had some real success in helping some friends and acquaintances lose weight and I think the ‘secret’ is dedicating yourself to getting them the results they want. Over delivering and keeping them motivated.
I’m signing up to the forum to get advice from more experienced trainers, and any feedback is appreciated.
Hi Jason,
I know I have some good articles on this forum that you should read. Two things come to mind instantly: Be sure to read the one on bootstrapping. Then I do believe I have something there on marketing.
Here's the important thing to keep in mind (well, THINGS):
** You do NOT have to spend a lot of money marketing your services! I can't say this loudly enough!
** Of course, before anyone starts a business, the reason for a business plan is to identify where you want to go with your business. If you have not done this yet, it's (past) time.
** However, what I find is writing a business plan without three key issues resolved makes it a nightmare project for health and fitness professionals. We are NOT trained, as a whole, in that part of business/doing what we like!
These three key issues are figuring out what your vision is for your business. What do you want to create? What does that really look like? Where would you like to see yourself and your business in 5, 10, 20 years from now? This makes a difference in what you plan for today.
Second, who is your ideal client? It can't just be everyone who will call you. If it's everyone, then in your marketing, you're speaking to NO ONE!! Now, this does NOT mean you can't take everyone, but you have to be specific in your marketing messages in order to draw your ideal client to you and become known.
Third, you have to really understand what it is about you that draws your ideal clients to you. There is something very unique about you and once you clearly understand what that is, then you can capitalize on it.
Grin; in a nutshell, that's my coaching process, and my coaching process is in my book that will be out in July.
Seriously, though, until you've identified these key issues, you will struggle.
Meanwhile, though, good luck, have fun and enjoy your future education!
