Hello, my name is Maureen from Atlanta, Georgia. I am an advocate for Health and Fitness and would like to obtain a certification as a Personal Trainer.

I am a health fanatic and have integrated health and fitness as a lifestyle for both my family and I.

I am eager to become certified but I am somewhat confused on which type of certification to pursue. Therefore, I have joined this forum with the hopes of guidance and knowledge from other experts nor persons with the same desire.

Hi Maureen! In order to get the most meaningful advice from some of the "old pros" here (which ain't me, I'm a newbie myself), let us know the following:

1. What type of clients are you looking to work with -- e.g. general exercisers, elderly, weight management, group exercise classes, etc.

2. What type of environment are you thinking of operating in -- e.g. employee of a gym, individual "in home" training, independent contractor offering classes here and there, etc.

3. What type of schedule are you wanting to work -- e.g. full time job, part time in the evenings and on weekends, etc.

4. What kind of "tester" are you -- do you respond well to "book learning" and pass comprehensive examinations with ease, or are tests something that you struggle with?

Those are the biggies right off the top of my head.

Hi Maureen,

Pretty much as Brian mentioned, some of these questions can help YOU decide the answers to your questions.

My suggestion to people interested in becoming a personal trainer is first determine who you want to train and in what setting. Then investigate the top organizations to see which one fits your style and goals best. From there you can decide your path to certification.

Margie
