Default Has Anyone Heard of AAPT?

    hi there

i live in ny and recently enrolled with AAPT (American Association of Personal Training) to get my certification.

they are licensed thru the NYS Dept of Education but are not as well known as NSCA, ACSM, NASM, or ACE and I want to be sure i am getting myself into an accredited certification program.

i am wondering if anyone has heard of them and if so, if you have any insight/input about them.

    thanks!

I hadn't heard of them until I saw your post but googled them and found this link: www.aaptschool.com

If this is what you are talking about, then it seems that one key difference between this and certifications such as ACSM, NSCA etc. is that AAPT is an actual, physical school in Manhattan that provides 3 months in-person training on becoming a personal trainer after which I assume they will give you a certificate; whereas ACSM, NSCA are certifying bodies (among other thing) that certify you on passing a computer based/paper exam which you largely study for by yourself.

I don’t know how it compares to an ACSM certification (I would assume not well) but it seems like something you’d want to do if you are looking to get some practical training outside of actually working at a gym.

    Good luck!

Seems like major over-kill to me - I wrote a detailed blog post on it a couple of years ago:

I have to say that to spend that much on a program to just get experience is a bit of overkill, honestly. I still remember, years and years ago, when you had to have a sponsor for ACSM certification, and I approached an expert who I thought could be my sponsor. The advice given to me was go to school and get a degree. If you're going to spend this much money, that's my advice, too.

If you want a program to give you the basics, keep looking. This is way too much to spend. Certifications from organizations outside of the top three doesn't mean a whole lot in the industry.

    Good luck!
