Default NPTI (National Personal Trainer Institute) for a new trainer

    Hi Everyone,

I am getting into the training game late. I am 43 and already have a BS and a MS degree in unrelated fields. I want to become a CPT and was looking into NPTI to get a solid footing in the field and then get certified. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about NPTI? They have a campus in Lisle, IL that would be close to my house.

Also, it doesn't look like ISSA is a very popular cert on this board. I have not researched them too much yet, but it seems like ISSA is more geared to someone who wants to be in business for themself. Does anyone know anything about ISSA?

    Thanks for your help.

    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

I was waiting to see if someone was going to answer this. I know of someone who went to NPTI and she really enjoyed it and learned a lot. She went on to get her ACSM certification.

As far as ISSA is concerned, I do not know much about this organization. Perhaps someone who does will chime in. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

I've met several people who are NPTI certified. NPTI sometimes send their students to me to get the AAAI/ISMA certs that I teach. Basically, NPTI is a 5-6 month course and costs between $5,000 -$6,000. They use the NSCA Essentials of Strength and Conditioning as their manual. From everything I can tell its a good cert and after 6 months, people often come out knowing a lot of what it takes to be a personal trainer.
