That is odd. Do they not have a free weight area? Every gym I have been to has a free weight area or an area for stretching/body weight exercises.

I just started my first personal training job and I need help with program design and workout ideas. I like to do a lot of different exercises without using just the weight machines but the gym has VERY little floor space, the 1 fitness room usually has a class in it while I'm training, and i'm not allowed to take clients outside due to liability issues.
Any ideas??

Yes, there is a free weight area however it is very small. I always feel like I'm in the way of everyone when I'm training a client because we either have to stand in front of a bench or between them and usually someone is either wanting to or is using the benches.
I have so many great exercise ideas but feel like I'm held back due to the size and limitations of the gym. It is so frustrating!

Wow, that must be a really, really small gym! It doesn't sound like you have many options. You could talk to the manager and ask him/her to create a space. (Not sure if that is at all possible since the gym sounds small.) Is there not the end of a hallway (or anywhere else) you could do the exercises? So strange... Where do people stretch?

ecufit that might just be the challenge your looking for. maybe you can wrap your mind around ideas for exercises that are directly aimed at a lack of space. there is a lot of balance techniques that require very little space and still effectively get the job done. good luck with it.Originally Posted by ecufit

I would just do cirucits since you have to bump heads with different people working out and have limited space. just keep "em moving. Dont call it a circuit though. healthy people think circuits are wimpy (they are not) call it xtreme workout or something like that. toss in a cardio exercise every 2-3 strength exercises or do calisthenics in between. Im going to bet most of your clients cant do a push up so dont overlook body-weight movements either.
hope this helps
