I must say I admit that looks do matter to me as far as personal training goes. When I look at prospective PT, I use his/her physical appearance as a gauge of how fit he/she is. And that's important because I'd look to him/her as an example and model for me to follow.
That said, when I say "physical appearance", I don't necessarily mean having the perfect superhero body or anything like that. I just mean not obviously fat, or skinny as a toothpick, or anything else in between that may look unhealthy. I short, a super-defined body is not required, but is a bonus, because he/she has obviously been through what it takes to get it. This is not even mentioning the fact that I'd like my PT to be able to properly demo the exercises and overcome the physical challenges he/she decides to put me through.
I'm looking into getting my PT certification and work it as a second job to my software engineering day job. I've recently been trying to figure out what job I can have that allows me to help people and "give back" directly, and after taking myself from 5'7" 195 lbs to 147 lbs a few years ago, I'd like to help others make the changes they want, health-wise. However, while I'm studying for the test (I'm thinking ACE first), you can be sure I'll be working out like hell to be sure I look the part of a PT as well!

Looks matter, they shouldnt but we live in a society that puts too much value in the visual.
Would you want to hire an overweight PT or one who is in good shape?
Just remember who your client base is....body builder physique can be quite intimidating to a office worker or mother of 3.
However as a PT, shouldnt you practice what you preach? It doesnt matter if you are a body builder, crossfit athlete, sport specific or general fitness and weightloss.
