    Default AFPA and IFPA

Is anyone familiar with either of these associations? If so are the reputable? Im thinking of getting further certification with either or both, but i wanted to do some homework on each. Thanks.

I have to be honest, I have never heard of those two certs.

But that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Depending on your current certification and your specialty, I'd follow it up with one of these 4, that I see prominately in PT mags and bulletin boards:

    NSCA
    ACSM
    ACE
    or
    NASM

I know a couple of other certs are geared more towards the "group exercise" trainer:
    such as AFAA

Hope that helped. (And I hope I didn't offend any PT that are certified by those two agencies. )

They both have sports conditioning specialist certs that interest me, but like you, I have never heard of them. Thanks for the reply

    Hey Mase,

If you have a college degree (in any field) you should start studying for the CSCS especially if you want to work with athletes.

I agree 100% with Dave's advice. You can't go wrong getting a cert from one of the organizations he mentioned. I am going to get both a NSCA cert and ACSM cert.

I'm a junior in college, and these look like a way to get into athletic conditioning before I graduate. They require a national certification (which I have). Once I graduate (or shortly before) I will take the NSCA CSCS. Thank you for your reply.

Mase, Good for you for thinking ahead so much. When I was a junior in college I didn't prepare myself for what I would do after I graduated. I was so caught up in the present that I didn't give my future career a whole lot of thought. Sounds like you really know what you want.

Years ago I used to teach for the IFPA. As I understand it its an outgrowth from AAAI/ISMA who I teach for now. When I tought for them, I found it to be a comprehensive cert that covered many of the topics personal trainers need to be familar with. I believe they are based in Florida. their website is well organized and I believe they have a personal trainer locator for IFPA students also.
