    Default Question about group training.

For those of you who do in home training how much success have you had training small groups? Do you find that your clients make better progress when they are trained in small groups?

    Default small group training

I love group training. What i have been doing is holding an outdoor class on the weekends. All of my clients are invited to participate and they can bring friends. I charge $15 a person and usually get 10 or so people. I send out emails once a week announcing the time and location. We do many different types of drill that allow all populations to participate. My youngest is 10 and oldest is 67. Rember you can give everyone options for every exercise (progressions and regressions) I have not given group lessons in a gym. I will do duets sometimes, but it is more difficult than outdoors.

Default Group Training is the only way to go

I do group personal training in Orange County California and charge $45 per person for groups of 6 at a time. As long as people also eat right they get awesome results

I have most people do whole body workouts 2x per week

    HI Kim and Chris,

I'd like to know if you had to approach your local government if you use a public park for group exercise.

If so, did you have to provide proof of insurance and other disclaimers so your participants, if they get hurt don't sue the local government body that "owns" or "runs" the park?

I'm thinking about starting a boot camp class in the late spring, early summer at a park near my house and want to make sure I make a good impression when dealing with the local politicos who oversee the park.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

    Hi Dave,
I did not contact the government about using the parks. I have not had any trouble and many of my clients are judges and lawyers. In general I would carry personal training insurance. you never know what can happen. In many cases I do not think a client will try to sue you as you are not worth much compared to companies or government agencies. The park I use has an outdoor running course, people are playing pickup soccer, tai chi, frisbee...Find an active park and it will be like any other recreational sport. I know there is a little risk. you can always approach the government if you do not feel confident in that decision and ask what you need to do to use space at the park. they might love your idea and help promote it.

Group training is where the industry is moving - Thomas Plummer talked about recently how one-on-one traning has failed miserable in this industry and he should know - he goes to 500-600 health clubs each year. Group is a win win and is less intimidating to individuals from the training side of the business. One-on-One can be very intimidation, plus small group allows you to make more money, but keep your cost down per client. Work smarter, not harder.

Group is alot easier and more fun , and yet less intimidating. I also offer Couple Training to make it fun for older couples who actually like spending time with each other.

    Default group training

Honestly I have seen better results training my clients at 1 on 1 personal training studios. When i do go to their homes i prefer they have some decent equipment. but honestly it is about your program design and your client's will to achieve their goals. you must stick to your program in order to track your progress...group classes well they seem to enjoy them but progress?? it really depends how you structure the class and if you make it a 6 week class or 4 week class...if you do it that way you can put realistic goals and work to achieve them. if it is just an ordinary group class that occurs every sat lets say and open to anyone you are always going to have new people and different levels...so working towards a common goal will always be difficult.
