Speaking from experience, I believe its important to get personal and build a professional friendship with them. I want to keep my clients as long as possible and by building more than a trainer-client relationship you'll be able to.
1. Always be on time.
2. Always be clean-dressed, no holes or stains in clothes. Clothes must be in great condition. You will look a lot more confident.
3. Never swear, insult, or make derogatory jokes.
4. Smile... a lot!
5. Motivate and encourage the client at all times, but always in a low voice.
6. If you are counting reps, do so in a quiet manner.
7. Always be quick to compliment your client's progress and efforts.
8. Be sure to listen when your client opens up to you about his/her personal life, but be careful not to become the psychologist.
9. Open up to your client about your life too, but never get personal.
10. Always give your client your 100% attention. Do not answer your phone, try to pick up other clients or focus your gaze elsewhere while you are working.
Remember, it's your time that they payed for. Show them that you are worth it.

I think that it's really important to train a client based on what works for them ... some clients get motivated when I get in their face and I'm pushing them hard and some don't. Some clients don't want a smiley smiley trainer cause they're not there for a social atmosphere but more of a serious workout.
You really get to know a client by listening and trying different tactics.
