Default How Far Do You Go.......

to get a client to renew?

As most of you know the part of the world where I personal train is economically depressed and clients that can afford what I charge are few and far between.

So here's the deal. I sent my clients a Christmas card with a "Special offer" inside of it if they renewed by a certain date.

One client did renew, but the other has not, although at our last training session he thanked me for the Christmas Card and said he would send me a check for our next round of sessions if I sent him an invoice. So I did send him an invoice the very same night after our training session.

Well the new year came and went and still no check from him. So I e-mailed and asked if he was still interested in training. He said "YES" but he had hurt his back over the holiday and wouldn't be able to train for a couple of weeks. So I said "OK, when you are completely healed and feeling better, call me and we'll schedule some sessions".

It is now 3 weeks later and I have not recieved a call or an e-mail indicating this guy is ready to train again.

Should I give him ANOTHER call or should I wait it out until he calls me?

Truthfully, he's one of my higher maintenance clients that I bend over backwards for session after session and if he doesn't decide to renew that's fine with me. But the "Not Knowing" is killing me.

    What would you do?

I would send him one last email asking if he was interested again then leave it. One thing I have found useful to get repeat clients is to get them with my on line log in with access to all their graphs etc - weight , body fat, how much they lifted over a particular lift etc, their diet plan and exercise I set them- which is only accessable if they have at least 1 session per week.

    Dave,
Let it go or simply send out a mass e-mail (including him) to simply remind him that you are still available. The "hurt my back" line is crap. he is simply not ready to commit. And your calls and badgering won't make him commit if he is not ready. From a business standpoint, it may hurt. But for every 1 client you lose, you should have 2 waiting in the wings. From a personal trainer standpoint--you should only want clients that are willing to commit to your program. Those are the ones that will be successful and will market you.

Yup - I cosign this - let him go and spend your time cultivating more of your "ideal" clients - this will lead to more business than expending more time and mental energy on problem or unmotivated clients -
