I sent out a bunch of emails with my resume to gyms and in response to help wanted ads. I was telling people that I am about to become certified and would like even a front desk position to get my foot in the door and get some experience in a fitness environment. I got a call from a person with Custom Built Personal Training and set up an interview a few days from now. I am a little concerned, because after I visited their web site it seemed like I might be getting a raw deal, even though I don't know what the deal it yet. Has anybody heard/worked for them before? It seems like a temp. service for trainers.

thankyou,
Jonny

Hey Jonny,

I have never heard of them, but that is not surprising as none of their locations are in states near me (Ohio, Pennsylvania).

I'm not sure what you are expecting. from reading their site trainers could get paid between $14 - $30 an hour, which is not bad for the industry but depends on your location and what trainers in that area are currently making.

The website seems to indicate a "heavy sales" role for the personal trainer and this may come with monthly sales quotas or at least a training session quota.

Your instincts are correct, this company is a "Personal training" outsource company that tells the gym "Hey don't worry about forming a personal training department, our professionals will take care of it for you!". Which is neither good nor bad, but like I said it may require heavy sales, which most trainers aren't down with.

Questions I would ask:
1) Will I be at one location or multiple locations?
2) Will I get compensated for travel between locations?
3) Is there a monthly sales quota for trainers you hire?
4) Is there a penalty for not reaching this quota?
5) Do I have to work "floor hours" on the gym floor to gain my own clients or do you provide leads for me?
6) If I do have to work "Floor hours" what is the hourly wage. (Something on the website indicates that there are a couple of "Free" sessions with memebers, which may mean you don't get paid).

I say go to the interview and ask these questions and more. If you still feel uneasy about it, don't accept the position. But it may be a good ground floor oportunity for a starting personal trainer if you live in a state or area that they have a lot of business in.

Good Luck! Let us know how it goes.

Dave
