Question Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription - CPT test requirements

Do I need to know what is in chapters 8, 9, and 10 of this reference for the CPT exam?

These seemed to be meant for the higher level certifications. I don't want to waste time on these if they are not on the test.

    Thanks in advance.

I have the sixth edition of this book. What are they on now? 7? 8?

To answer your question, you do not need to know exercise prescription for cardiac/pulmonary patients because this is not in your scope of practice as a personal trainer. There should be some sort of legend or icon system in the book that breaks this down for you. (I don't think there is though.) There is KSA info toward the back of your book.

They're actually up to the 8th edition.

Looking at Chapters 8, 9 and 10...Chapter 8 is Rx for Healthy Populations and Special Considerations, which includes Pregnancy, Children and Adolescents, Older Adult, Environmental Considerations. There are several KSAs related to these populations for the CPT. Since I took the test in December, I definitely can remember some questions around pregnancy for sure. And definitely a question or two re: children and older adults. My memory is a bit fuzzy but I am sure there were a sprinkling of others that touched on the other populations.

As Christina mentioned, Rx for patients with cardiac disease is out of our scope for and ACSM-CPT.

Chapter 10 - Rx for Other Clinical Populations including Arthritis, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Osteoperosis, Overweight and Obesity...these have specific KSAs that you are required to know. Were there specific questions on the test? That I don't remember specifically, but if is within your scope of practice to be familiar with these areas, my call would be to fold them into your studying strategy.

As someone in a post who just took the exam said "you're not just studying to pass the exam, you're studying to become the best trainer you can be."
